I love the aesthetics, materials, rocker of the midsole and outsole.
However, this shoe has a fatal flaw. The heel is way too low. So frustrating and weird. This is a goretex shoe. That inherently implies you need it to stay dry and keep the elements out. So, taking the risk of having such a low heel height is such an unforced error. It a glaring mistake. Additionally, the low heel height creates excessive heel slip. Perhaps lastly, the heel collar itself doesn’t sit over the widest part of the calcaneus and hug the achilles that would help the slip issue, it instead wraps around AT the widest part of your heel – also not helpful. I am wondering if you have the same designer as on the NIKE ACG?? They have the exact same problem in the heel of their goretex trail shoes in the current model and over the past several seasons. To get everything so close to right and muck the heel so badly is just sad.

I have had my Sylan’s for a couple weeks now and I couldn’t be more pleased. I am a big fan of the arc of the shoe, it allows for a very comfortable and appealing run.

Really interesting shoe. Initially I was put off by the low heel as walking in them felt VERY odd. However these are trail shoes and they are predominantly for running. When I ran in them felt no issue with the reduce heel depth but I do not heel strike, if you heel strike these are possibly not the best shoes for you (the mid foot section of the sole has more padding than the heel). The lugs are good, would wear out quickly on tarmac so don’t ruin these shoes doing that. I recommend on mixed trails of semi compacted, which the large amounts of padding is good for, wet terrain and mud. decent for long runs, very comfortable. On super soft ground you’ll loose a lot of energy through the cushioning. I’m currently on my 4th pair of Arcteryx Norman LD3’s and been through one pair of Norman LD2. These are completely different shoe to them. Slightly narrower than the LD3 but wider than LD2.

It’s an almost perfect shoe with one deal breaker. I love the style, I love the cusion, the fit is perfect, but the heel.. it always slips no matter walking or running, I tried to break-in the shoe in by running a mile and tweaking the sole but was of no avail. I had 10 different hiking shoes in my life and this is the first time I had this problem.

These were my first pair of Arc’teryx trail running shoes and I promise you it’s worth going for the gore-tex. Bought the yellow and grey ones. I call them my lemon pepper steppas. Bought them a half-size smaller then usually because they were the last of that style and my feet have had no issues at all. Broke them in along the “7 Falls Trail to Bear Canyon” out in Tucson AZ. The inner ankle sock design took me off guard at first but I quickly grew to appreciate the comfy support since these do leave your ankle slightly exposed. Crossed about 8 rivers and socks stayed dry as long as you keep water out of the top of them (duh).

The Sylan GTX shoe is decent but specialized in need. The Midsole rocker provides stability for joggers and midsole walkers. During walks, the rocker feels awkward compared to other rocker shoes such as the Hokas and the New Balances. A previous review mentioned the lowered heel and I would like to highlight this as well. The transition from heel strike to midsole is not the smoothest. I feel that my arch is supported neutrally at the cost of the lowered design and less cushioning.
This shoe is not for those who have wide feet and those who have hyperhidrosis. The shoe is not breathable

I tried the size 12 first before bumping it up to size 13.
The material is very hard and a bit uncomfortable compared to the non-GTX Sylan, which fits like a glove.
Note that the shoe tongue is also designed differently. Overall, the fit of the non-GTX Sylan and the GTX Sylan is very different. Make sure you try both before buying.

I’ve had the Sylan GTX for around 2 months now and I couldn’t be happier with them. I have about 50 miles on them so far and they seem to be getting better with each run. They feel remarkably supportive and with an aggressive profile, they handle variable terrain with ease. The shoes have a bit of a high platform and very pronounced rocker which is has been great for performance but takes a bit of time to get used to.
Out of the box, they’ll feel pretty ridged but after a couple miles they’ll ease up to the perfect fit. The GTX model has been nice far for wet, muddy days and I haven’t had much issue with moisture build up in the shoe with it being Gore-Tex. I did notice that the heel felt a bit shallow and I was getting a lot of slippage but once I laced the shoes up to the top hole, it seemed to combat that issue. I would say on future models however, this would be worth looking into.
Overall, I’ve been super stoked about the Sylan GTX and couldn’t be happier with how they’ve performed. For what it’s worth, my pace has improved since wearing these… could just be mental… could be the shoes…. could be that I’ve eaten way less ice cream lately… who can say really? Take it as you will. Great shoes and I’d highly recommend them.

Had a hard time finding a black gortex running shoe but I sure like the Sylan GTX shoe.

The Norvan is my go-to travel shoe – gives a lot of support for walking long days. I got the Sylan to replace my last pair but this shoe feels much more aggressive than the Norvan. I think I will use this for hiking/trail running only and get another Norvan for walking/casual use.
