I had to re-order a 1/2 smaller than from my previous 8 to 7.5 so I think the sizing is true vs me having to order 1/2 size up. Width and toe box are great and why I started wearing Altras. The waterproofness adds a bit of protection for a trip that we may have to walk over some snow areas.

Altra has seemingly forgotten the original vision of the lone was to provide a shoe with a “wide” toe box, specifically designed to allow adequate room for toe splay and accommodate toe swelling which occurs over the duration of longer hikes. The Lone Peak 9 Waterproof is cramped and narrow in the toe box. The thick toe cap further restricts flexibility and presses directly on my big toe. I tried a half size up but the mid and heel area felt loose and sloppy and the length felt clunky. I am utterly disappointed as I have been wearing lone peaks for several years and they have been a blessing to my feet. Unfortunately, I will have to find an alternative shoe as these are no longer wearable. Altra, please go back to what got you to the dance with the lone peak “waterproof” and offer at least one option with a truly wide toe box made with flexible and supple materials. Save the narrow toe box design for your other shoes.
